He was born in 1917 in Wilmington, Del., ,to Nathan Bailey and Anita Lynch Bailey. He married Joyce Wentz in 1944. He was educated in the Wilmington Public Schools and later attended Nyack College, Taylor University, Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary. He served in Patton’s Third Army, 65th Division, iduring WWII.  From 1951-53, he served in occupied Germany. He was born to the late Matthew Moon and Leola Akridge Moon Burke in Shelby, N.C.
